Hope You had a great 2017.

It´s always great to look back. Although the summer was a bit late the bravest still sailed in December here in the Baltic Sea. The same did we kind of.

Our first customer Abruka harbour in Estonia started from July. Naissaare harbour took Marina Ahoy into use from September and served 170 customers until the end of the season. There was a lot of feedback, I really mean a lot. Those were the busiest months for us understanding our customers and developing the pits and pieces necessary for their everyday work. And we had our proof of concept.

For season 2018 we have 20 harbours from Estonia already on board managing more than half the number of all visits by boat and it´s still December right? There are some more harbours around the Baltic.

We started from mobile apps. They still call our tool “the app”, but today Marina Ahoy is much more a management tool for harbours and will be in the future. We saw that there are more benefits for sailors to use a convenience app if the harbours support its features - occupancy overview not only for harbours but also for sailors using the app, booking, self-check in and mobile payments, sign-out of seasonal berth-holders with marking the return date to allow harbours serve more customers while their seasonal berth-holders are out.

A full-functional self-service means more convenience for sailors, less hassle for harbours and more time to just chat with the friendly harbour master.

Our team wishes You an innovative next season and hope to hear from you soon!

You must have heard of The hero´s journey. A narrative, a tale of a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed. That’s us! A Startup Sauna alumni, chosen among the TOP15 startups in the Nordics by ArcticStarup, finally home.

It´s almost 20 days since Arctic15. I still remember every minute, every face and the pile of business cards in my table remind me to take at least some replies. This was a really interesting time. Thanks ! But here we are. Already restless again to move forward.

There was another milestone for us in Helsinki. The final presentation of the Lean Innovation Lab. The lab is a consultancy service, a project offer by Shift Actions OY and Mirum to develop an idea into a proven concept in just 30 days. The lab was a prize of the Wärtsiläs Marine Mastermind competition that we won earlier this year. It sounds odd. Maybe. Unusual. For sure. Probably they will come up with some other model next year, but for now a good example how a big corporation is probing towards a startup collaboration. But even if there were moments during the lab that we felt the 50 000 could have been better invested, we are quite happy with the result. A 3rd party consultant saying Wärtsilä, that they should go for it is just priceless.

The mom test. This is what comes to my mind when I think back to Startup Sauna. Before Sauna we didn´t meet much criticism. Most of the audience felt that Marina Ahoy is cool. The field is cool. There was a lot of wondering why they are not already doing that, but we were the superstars. The same effect occurred in Startup Sauna. The coaches loved the idea. There was more encouragement than criticism. Until the end. They said we are not investor ready. Okey. But why? When I asked an investor for an opinion he just exploded saying that the app is worth nothing, totally useless, like made by a 8 year old. Later that day a fellow startuper from the spring batch pointed to Foursquares Swarm Check In functionality as something similar and then I understood. I understood that some of the coaches didn´t understand it at all. To be clear - there were coaches who got it right away, thanks! and for those who didn´t, once again - Marina Ahoy is much more than Swarms Check In (read, "here I am"). Marina Ahoy is an automated customer service touchpoint for harbours, complex enough to implement for commercial shipping and easy to use as Swarms Check IN feature.

There´s no holiday, or what was it called, this summer, again. But a good balance is there for sure. The sun is shining and Marina Ahoy is from Saaremaa! First we will celebrate the summer with a full day of brainstorming next weekend and then continue with the routine. Here we come again !

Dear diary. Our last blogpost was named Week 1 in Finland. I was supposed to release a post after every week but hey, this is the 4th week already! This is the first 30minute time slot after a long time and I try to get most out of it. So the program is intense. There has been fear of failure, too honest feedback, tears. But no complaints here. We have moved a huge step forward. We have been selected as one of the TOP15 teams to present ourselves in Arctic15 pitching competition. YESS! But that’s it. There is a lot of ups and downs. There are days when you lose all of your motivation. Then take the late night hours to figure things out and you go to bed already motivated to

continue. We have found new fresh competitors, but this is just the proof that the market exists. We didn´t get traction in Finland with our MVP because the Finns manage harbours differently. But we have new harbours in Estonia every week and we know that Swedes manage the harbours like Estonians. Actually all the Europeans do except the Finns. And this is not our problem.

So, by the end of the 4th week we have 15 marinas signed up. Doesn´t seem like a lot, but considering the minimum functionality we have today to offer, a great result. After two weeks there will be an iOS app to service the majority of yacht owners and there will be invoicing functionality for marinas. The first functionality we can start to monetize.

Startup Sauna will end in Arctic15 where Relika will present us on stage both, on 2nd and 3rd of June – on Startup Sauna demo day and on the Arctic15 pitching competition. And I´m still amazed. As said before, Marina Ahoy was chosen among the TOP15 nordic start-ups to keep an eye on this year by ArcticStartup. Let´s stop here and hope I can write another blogpost covering the overall emotions from Finland next week.
